Manchester City will hope to close down the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal when they play host to Newcastle United on Saturday. This match has all the necessary ingredients to be an interesting one. Both sides are sitting at the top end of the table and have had plenty of positives to take from the current season. However, recent form is with City, as the Magpies have their own struggles to deal with.

Newcastle United suffered a heart-break at the weekend after losing the EFL Cup final to Manchester United 2-0. They would have very much loved to have ended their lengthy trophy drought, however, it was not to be. Man United were more clinical in front of goal, while Newcastle failed to do much with the huge amount of possession they had. This result is also in line with the club’s recent struggle in the Premier League, which has seen them drop out of the top four places.

On the other hand, Manchester City will be coming into this game on the back of a couple of comprehensive victories. After beating Bournemouth in the league, Pep Guardiola’s side eased past Bristol City in the FA Cup. As things stand, defending champions Manchester City have 55 points from 25 games to be placed second in the Premier League table – five points behind leaders Arsenal. Meanwhile, Newcastle United are fifth in the standings with 41 points from 23 matches.

Manchester City will have to take a look at Aymeric Laporte and John Stones before the match to understand about their fitness situation. Stefan Ortega could very well miss this game. Meanwhile, Newcastle United will welcome back Anthony Gordon, who was cup-tied for the EFL Cup final at the weekend. However, they will continue to miss the suspended goalkeeper, Nick Pope. Emil Krafth will also miss this game due to an injury.
