Manchester City were at their ruthless best in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola’s side welcomed the German champions to Etihad Stadium for a mouth-watering contest. Both sides had their moments in an exhilarating contest. However, it was Manchester City who were clinical in the final third, as they ran out with the match as 3-0 winners. Goals from Rodrigo, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland proved to be the difference in the end for the Premier League outfit.

It was an emphatic result for Manchester City against one of the favourites for the Champions League crown this season. Despite being happy with the “incredible result,” Pep Guardiola feels there is still a lot left to be played in this tie. Hence, he wants his players to be at their 100% in the second leg in Germany. Speaking about the second leg, Guardiola was quoted as saying by their club’s website, “I know what we have to do there, and we have to perform really well. They are able to score one, two, three, I know it and the players know it.”

“It was an incredible result but we have to do our game with a huge, huge personality because they are a top team. Here we have our chances. Here in this stadium we are something special this season. When we have the momentum we are clinical. It is the same in Munich. I have been there for three years.  I know what it means and the people. But we are going there to score the goals and to try to win the game. To do that will be so difficult.”

It is so difficult to control them: Pep Guardiola

The scoreline might make it look like a comfortable victory for the Premier League champions, however, the game was a tightly-fought affair, with both teams having their moments in the match. “It was a Champions League game, quarter-final against a top team. For 55, 60 minutes it was a tight game. Part of the game they were better than us. We found an incredible goal from Rodri. We could not control the pockets, especially the pace they have. It is so difficult to control them,” he explained.

“In the first five, ten minutes of the second half, they were better with half chances and set-pieces. But after we adjusted something and in the last part of the game we were better. We scored three fantastic goals. We had chances. It was an incredible result. But I know a little bit, we have to do something a little bit better to adjust something so we don’t suffer too much with the quality they have. We will try to do.”

He further quipped: “Emotionally I am destroyed – I have [aged] 10 more years today!. It was such a demanding game. Now we have to relax, take a day off, prepare for Leicester and after we travel [to Germany].”
