Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-final stage after losing to Real Madrid over two legs. The Spanish giants registered two 2-0 victories in home and away legs to ease their way into the semi-final with a 4-0 aggregate victory. Chelsea were much better in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, as they put Real Madrid under immense pressure on occasions. However, they were not able to turn the positive moments into goals.

After the match, experienced Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva expressed his frustration with the result. With Chelsea languishing in unusual mid-table positions in the Premier League table, they can more or less say goodbye to Champions League football for next season. With Thiago Silva at 38 years of age, it is unlikely to see the Brazilian play in the competition again. “It’s a bit of frustration, a bit of disappointment, a bit of anger,” Silva was quoted as saying by their club’s website.

“It’s possibly my last match in the Champions League, and it’s sad to finish like that. The frustration is there, above all with how the game went. The match over there was very difficult. Here the first half we played very well, controlled the match, and stopped goalscoring opportunities. After that, if you don’t score against a team like Real Madrid, that’s what happens. That’s the level.”

‘The most difficult thing to do is create goalscoring opportunities’

He added: “I don’t know how many matches we have failed to score, but the most difficult thing to do is create goalscoring opportunities. Then not putting it in the net, I don’t understand exactly why. But we shouldn’t just blame the attackers, because the defenders have had chances too. At the end of the first half, Cucurella had one, if he scores the match is a different one in the second half. But that’s football.”

There is not much left to play this season for Chelsea in the league. Either way, Thiago Silva wants to make the most of every game. “We have seven matches left, and we need to look for the victory in each of them. When we wear the Chelsea shirt we have to give everything to win. It’s difficult but we must continue, raise our heads and keep working,” he stated.

Conor Gallagher reflects on Champions League exit

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher believes they created more chances than Real Madrid, however, a lack of clinical edge was a problem on Tuesday night. “I feel like we played well, we had a lot of chances. I think we definitely had more and better chances than they did but football is all about taking your chances and we didn’t do that, which was disappointing,” he explained.

“Of course, we’re going to be gutted, but we played some good stuff I think. The cutting edge in front of goal is basically what wins you games and we haven’t got that at the minute. It’s definitely a big improvement over our recent performances but you need to score goals to win games. They did that and we didn’t.”
