Two sides challenging for Champions League qualification are set to go head-to-head on Sunday as Newcastle United play host to Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League fixture at St. James’s Park. The result ended the Magpies’s five-game winning streak and allowed Manchester United to leapfrog their northern adversaries in the Premier League standings. Eddie Howe’s side have recorded 15 top flight wins this term and their latest success came away to Brentford (2-1) on April 8 thanks to an own goal by David Gaya and Alexander Isak’s 61st-minute winner. Meanwhile, Newcastle have been solid at home this season, having lost only one of their 14 league-matches at St. James’s Park, while collecting 29 points in front of their own supporters. Howe’s side managed to secure a 2-1 win over Spurs in the reverse fixture in October last year.
Tottenham, on the other hand, have won only five of their 15 away matches in the top flight this term and they are winless in their last six league-matches on the road, while losing four consecutive fixtures in the period. Spurs lost out to Bournemouth last Saturday despite the fact that Son Heung-min and Arnaut Danjuma found the back of the net. Prior to that, Cristian Stellini’s men got the better of fellow European-challengers Brighton & Hove Albion thanks to Son’s 10th-minute opener and Harry Kane’s winner 11 minutes from time. It was their 16th top flight victory of the campaign.
