Newcastle United welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park for a pulsating Premier League battle on Saturday. In an ideal scenario, Liverpool would walk into this game as favourites, however, this is not a normal situation. The Reds are only a shadow of their self that were fighting for an unprecedented quadruple at one point last season. They are already out of both domestic cups and are languishing in mid-table positions in the league – not where many expected Liverpool to be at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have been one of the surprise packages of this Premier League campaign. The Magpies have done impressively well to sit among the top four positions in the division. They have lost only once, which had come against Liverpool earlier this season. However, it’s their inability to convert draws into wins that has hurt Eddie Howe’s side the most. Newcastle have managed a staggering 11 draws already from 22 games – the highest in the Premier League so far this campaign.

As things stand, Newcastle United are placed fourth in the league standings with 41 points from 22 games. They have drawn four of their last five Premier League matches – a run which they would hope to end soon. However, it would be difficult against a Liverpool side that are fresh from winning the Merseyside derby. That 2-0 victory over Everton was the first time the Reds posted a Premier League win in 2023. Overall, Liverpool have 32 points from 21 matches to be placed ninth in the standings.

Possible Lineups

There are set to be some big-name absentees for both clubs ahead of this encounter. Newcastle United have the bigger absentee list. The home side saw Allan Saint-Maximin, Joe Willock and Almiron getting injured during their draw with Bournemouth last weekend. It will be interesting to see who among them are fit to return. There are also question marks over the participation of Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles. Besides, Bruno Guimaraes remains suspended, while Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett will also miss this game.

On the other hand, the injury situation is starting to look better for Liverpool. The recent return of Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino will be a big boost for them. Arthur could also join the squad soon from his injury concerns. However, they will continue to miss Luis Diaz, Ibrahima Konate and Thiago Alcantara through injuries.

Newcastle United possible line-up: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Gordon, Isak

Liverpool possible line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Elliott, Henderson, Salah, Gakpo, Nunez
