Middlesbrough play host to Brighton & Hove Albion in a FA Cup third round fixture at Riverside Stadium on Saturday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in their respective league-games. The hosts secured a comfortable 3-1 Championship win over Birmingham City on Monday, while Brighton thrashed Everton 4-1 in a Premier League match, two days later. Middlesbrough are currently occupying fifth spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 39 points from 26 games. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the 8th position in the Premier League table, with 27 points to their name from 17 outings.

Middlesbrough have ascended the Championship table since the appointment of Michael Carrick as manager in October. Boro have lost just two their last 10 games under the English tactician, a run which includes seven wins. Last time out, Boro defeated Birmingham, courtesy of Matt Crooks’ second half brace, and Chuba Akpomn’s late strike five minutes from time. Last season, Middlesbrough fans were treated to a brilliant FA cup journey as Boro reached the quarter-final stage, overcoming the likes of Mansfield Town, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before falling to Chelsea in the last eight.

Brighton, on the other hand, have been going through an inconsistent run of form, since the resumption of competitive action following the World Cup break. The Seagulls have recorded two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five games across all competitions and that includes an EFL Cup exit following a penalty shootout defeat to Charlton on December 22. However, Roberto Ze Zerbi’s men have not allowed that loss to derail their productive league campaign. The Seagulls thrashed Everton in their last match, courtesy of goals from Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Soly March and Pascal Grob.
