Mexico will take on Qatar in a Gold Cup fixture at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. El Tri are heading into the match on the back of a 3-1 win over Haiti on Thursday, while the Maroons played out a 1-1 draw against Honduras. The victory helped Jaime Lozano’s men to move to a maximum of six points from two games and occupy top spot in Group B, while the AFC outfit are sitting at the third position, with just a solitary point to their name, and two adrift of second-placed Haiti, who will be up against Los Catrachos in the other encounter of the group at Bank of America stadium. Mexico are virtually assured of a place in the quarter-finals, while the 2022 World Cup hosts need to secure all three points on Sunday and rely on the result in order to progress to the next round.

Mexico came into the tournament on the back of some disappointing results, having failed to reach the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup and losing 3-0 to USA in the CONCACAF Nations League semif-inals. However, a coaching change ahead of the Gold Cup seems to have breathed new life into El Tri, who were impressive in the two victories under Jaime Lozano. With seven goals in two matches, the Mexicans have looked potent in front of goal. After thrashing Honduras 4-0 in their opening fixture, Lozano’s men defeated Haiti last time out thanks to Henry Matin’s 46th-minuite opener, Ricardo Ade’s 56th-minute own goal and Santiago Gimenez’s effort seven minutes from time. The two dominant wins has assured themselves a spot in the last eight stage, while only a defeat by seven or more goals and a win by Haiti will prevent them from clinching first place in their group for a fourth successive occasion.

Qatar, on the other hand, are in danger of missing the knockout stage of this competition for the first time. The Maroons suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Haiti in their opening match on June 25 courtesy of Frantzy Pierrot’s winner seven minutes into the injury time, and four days later, once again conceded a late goal to share the spoils against Honduras. On Thursday, the AFC outfit took the lead through Tameem Al-Abdullah’s seventh-minute effort and looked set to take secure the win, but Alberth Ellis scored a 96th-minute equaliser for La H which meant that the points were shared at University of Phoenix Stadium. Now, Carlos Queiroz’s side will need Honduras to earn a result against Haiti on Sunday to have any chance of advancing, while the Maroons must get the better of El Tri.
