After a disappointing World Cup in Qatar last year, where they failed to reach the knockout stage, Mexico bounced back with a Gold Cup triumph in July, defeating Panama 1-0 in the final thanks to Santiago Gimenez’s 88th-minute winner. After that El Tri played two friendly games in September, drawing 2-2 against Australia and 3-3 against Uzbekistan. Those results represented major disappointments for Jaime Lozano’s men. El Tricolor twice came come behind to make the score 2-2 thanks to Raul Jimenez’s brace, before taking the lead through Uriel Antuna’s 88th-minute effort, but the Uzbek attacker Otabel Shukurov had other ideas by scoring in the injury time. Meanwhile, Lozano will be keen for his players to return to winning ways when they face Ghana on Sunday.
The Black Stars, on the other hand, will travel to USA off the back of back-to-back wins last month. Ghana wrapped up their AFCON qualification campaign with a 2-1 victory over Central Africa Republic on September 7 thanks to Mohammad Kudus’ 43rd-minute equaliser and Ernest Nuamah’s winner two minutes from time. The result helped them to seal top spot in Group E. Four days later, Chris Hughton’s side got the better of Liberia in a friendly game courtesy of one goal each from Nuamah, Kudus and Jordan Ayew. The victory extended their unbeaten run to five games across all competitions, recording three wins in the process.
