It goes without saying that Chelsea have not made a good start to the new season. The Blues began the campaign just the way they ended the last one. The 2022-23 season was a forgettable experience for Chelsea faithful. The Stamford Bridge outfit endured a torrid time, culminating in them finishing outside the top half of the Premier League table. It resulted in Chelsea spending heavily in the transfer window for the third successive time. Besides, they got a new manager – Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the changes made little difference to the start made by Chelsea. Be it results or performances, both were not up to the mark. But in recent games, there are signs of improvement. The Blues have now won three matches on the bounce in all competitions. After beating Brighton in the EFL Cup, Chelsea secured back-to-back away victories over Fulham and Burnley in the Premier League. It has undoubtedly improved the mood around the supporters, as most of their players have travelled with their national sides for the international break.

Very good things are coming: Mauricio Pochettino

Reflecting on the season so far, Mauricio Pochettino, quoted by the club’s website, said, “It’s always about building a team. It’s a young squad, a team that still need to know each other. Only with time and training can we provide the team with what it needs. It’s why it is only a matter of time, no doubt. We need to be calm in the way we judge players and the team. I think we are growing and very good things are coming. You can feel that, even if sometimes we have some ups and downs. But, in the end, we will succeed together, for sure.”

The Chelsea manager also spoke about how to deal with the young players, as they would require a more personal touch. “Young guys today demand a lot of energy. They need your work, your support, your say always. They need to feel confident and comfortable. For that, you need to know each other and spend time together. It’s a big job from all the coaching staff but it is a thing that we love to do,” he explained.

Pochettino then shifted his attention to the big list of injured players at their disposal. He made a small comparison with the situation of Manchester City, who are missing a couple of key players through injuries. “We have many players injured, key players who cannot compete and train with us. That is so important. You can see how different it is for a club like Manchester City, how affected they are, when there is no Rodri of [Kevin] De Bruyne, and that’s only two players,” the manager stated.

He added: “For us, we miss many key players that can help us develop and improve the team faster. Yes, in this way, when we recover all the players, for sure we will be ready to compete for big things. Even now, we need to believe that we can compete for big things despite the circumstance.”
