Manchester United supporters have early reason to celebrate in the transfer window after the club announced the arrival of talented young midfielder Mason Mount. The Englishman has joined the Red Devils on a contract till June 2028, with the option of a further year. This is an exciting signing in many regards for Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff. Mount is only 24 years old but he has already achieved plenty at club and international level.
Mason Mount was an important part of Chelsea winning the 2021 Champions League title among other trophies. He has also established a guaranteed spot in the English national team. His versatility to play in multiple positions across the midfield makes Mount a valuable asset. Above all, his unbelievable work rate has often been lauded by his past coaches. It is something that will come in handy for Erik ten Hag too.
After joining Manchester United, the 24-year-old detailed the reason behind the switch from the Blues to the Reds. “Yeah, I think over the last several months it became clear that I wasn’t in the plans moving forward [at Chelsea], and once I knew that United were involved, my decision was made up. It’s a massive club with huge, iconic players that have played here. And I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. And obviously getting in early ready for pre-season to start was a main objective of mine as well,” he told the club media.
Mount is keen to get down to business, as he spoke about the importance of the pre-season. “Pre-season is huge, it gets you in the right shape going into the season. So yeah, the most important thing for me was getting there, being ready on day one and being able to obviously meet all the players, the manager, get working because we’ve got a big season ahead and we want to win trophies, we want to be successful. So, yeah, it was really big for me to be here on day one and get going straightaway,” he added.
Earlier, John Murtough, Manchester United football director, spoke about how the club has admired Mount for a long time. “Mason is an extremely intelligent footballer and has so many fantastic technical qualities that will significantly add to our squad. We have admired his talents for a long time, so we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next steps in his career here at Old Trafford,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.
“His style of play and attributes are a perfect fit for this squad, and we all believe that he will only improve further by working with Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff. Mason himself is a world-class player but he also has the ability to improve the players around him through his game intelligence and tactical awareness. We were particularly impressed by his strong desire to join United, and his thirst for further success, as we push to drive up our performance levels next season and beyond.”
