Manchester United were able to see new signing Mason Mount make his debut for the club in a pre-season friendly against Leeds United in Oslo. The England international had a 45-minute run-out, as the Red Devils registered a 2-0 victory. Pre-season games are not about the results. It is all about getting the desired match fitness and help the players get up to speed ahead of the new season, which will start next month.

The players received a good reception during their arrival in the Norwegian capital. Mount was understandably impressed with it. “I’ve seen it first hand now. When we turned up last night and when we turned up at the stadium today, the support has been amazing. They came out and showed up for us today and it’s amazing to see. This is what we want to play for and we want to make them proud,” Mount told MUTV.

Mount was also happy to get the 45-minute run out in Manchester United’s first pre-season game. “We’ve been working very hard [in training], so it’s good to now put it into practice and play on the pitch now. That first week is mostly focused on getting the legs going again, getting the distance in the legs by running. But we’ve definitely been working on a few tactics as well, coming into this game. I’ve definitely got a great understanding of how the manager wants to work and how the boys play,” said Mount, donning the No.7 jersey for the first time.

“Obviously now it’s about using these games to work at it more and and putting it into practice when we get on the pitch. It was a good start today, a good win. As I said, it’s important to get the minutes in the legs, but it’s important to win as well and that’s what we want to do this season. All of us had a tough week, but it’s great to have that 45 minutes in the tank now.”

Mason Mount on his deeper role

At Chelsea, Mount was playing in an attacking midfield role. He was capable of operating anywhere in the three positions behind a striker. However, on Wednesday, he was playing in a deeper role. “I really liked that role today. Being able to drop in and get on the ball and start the play from a bit deeper, but also having that freedom to be able to get forward and get in the box,” he explained.

The senior players, including Mount was rested for the second half when youngsters took the centre stage. “When the younger boys came on and played, they were amazing. They were brilliant. It was really exciting for the club to see them come on and do well,” he added.
