Marcus Rashford will be revitalised: Ex-Manchester United forward Danny Webber

Rashford’s return could come as early as Saturday, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier expressing optimism that he could play some part in the game against Leicester City.

Former Manchester United forward Danny Webber reckons that Marcus Rashford would have benefited from the rest he has been afforded from being out after shoulder surgery. Webber made these comments while speaking in Monday’s episode of The Debate. Rashford, who picked up a prestigious doctorate from the University of Manchester last week, will be fully focused on making a return to the pitch after a three-month lay-off. Since the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign, the English forward has averaged over 50 club games per season. Webber is of the opinion that some time on the sidelines will mean Rashford will be fresh and prepared to hit the ground running.

“Hopefully when he comes back he’ll be refreshed and he’ll be ready to go, because he’s played a lot of football over the last couple of years, Marcus,” said Webber, as per the club’s website. “He needed that break. I know it came in the wrong way by him getting injured but he needed that break. He’ll be fresh, he’ll be revitalised and ready to go again.”

‘It’s an embarrassment of riches’

Marcus Rashford’s return could come as early as Saturday, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier expressing optimism that he could play some part in the game against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in the weekend. Rashford’s comeback will add extra arsenal to an attack which already boasts plenty of potency with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho. Webber is now keen to see the frontline players click into gear over the coming weeks.

“It’s an embarrassment of riches, actually, going forward,” he continued. “You look at the subs that came on the other day [against Everton] and that was minus Marcus. Martial started the game, but you’ve got Ronaldo, Cavani. Jesse’s playing out of his skin as well. I think it’s an embarrassment of riches but we’ve got to get it right, get into the rhythm and start blowing teams away.”

The Foxes have endured a difficult start to the new season, winning just two of their seven league games so far. However, Webber acknowledges the danger they will pose, particularly through Jamie Vardy, who is tied with Mo Salah at the top of the Premier League scoring charts, on six goals.

Webber on the backline

Meanwhile, United could face some problems at the backline, with Raphael Varane joining Harry Maguire on the treatment table after exiting the Nations League final early. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly would be the prime candidates to step in, with Phil Jones also available again. Webber, however, feels that the Reds should be looking to take the game to the hosts, regardless of who plays in the back four.

“They pass the ball, they’ve always got the threat of Vardy in attack,” says Webber. “It doesn’t matter who he’s playing against, he’s always up for it and he stretches the game, he makes it difficult.

“They’ve got good players, a decent side and Brendan Rodgers is a decent manager. So it is difficult but I think for us we’ve got to go out and do what we do.

“Make sure we impose ourselves on the game. We talked about the attacking players we have and we’ve got to go out and make sure we put them to the sword especially if we have one or two players out at the back. Attack is the best form of defence.”
