The 191st Manchester derby is set to take place at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, as Manchester United play host to Manchester City. Both sides enter the highly anticipated fixture on the back of Champions League wins in the mid-week, with the hosts edging past FC Copenhagen 1-0, while the reigning European champions got the better of BSC Young Boys 3-1. Man City are currently occupying third spot in the English top tier standings, having collected 21 points from nine league games, five points adrift of leaders Tottenham Hotspur, who have played a game more. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the eighth position, with 15 points to their name, five points shy of the top four.

After suffering back-to-back defeats against Crystal Place and Galatasaray in the top flight and Champions League respectively, Manchester United went into the international break on the back of a 2-1 league-win over Bentford. And then, on their return to action, the Red Devils defeated newly promoted Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane before securing a narrow win over Copenhagen on Tuesday night. Harry Maguire’s 72nd-minute header and a stoppage time penalty save from Andre Onana helped Eric ten Hag’s side get their first Champions League points on board this season. It was their third successive victory across all competitions. Meanwhile, only Crystal Palace and Southampton have prevented the Red Devils from scoring in a Premier League home fixture since the start of the 2022-23 season.
Manchester City, on the other hand, secured their third Champions League win from as many Group G games thanks to Manuel Akanji’s 48th-minute opener and Erling Haaland’s brace in Switzerland on Tuesday. Prior to that, Pep Guardiola’s side recorded their seventh league-win of the campaign against the high flying Brighton & Hove Albion courtesy of two goals inside the opening 20 minutes from Julian Alvarez and Haaland. Haaland now has nine league-goals to his name this season and the Norwegian is currently leading the race for the Gold Boot. Meanwhile, the Cityzens have now gone six games without keeping a clean sheet in all competitions, and have lost two of their last three premier league games.

Manchester City probable starting lineup: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodri, Silva, Doku, Alvarez, Foden, Haaland
