Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed what his side must do to stop Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema ahead of the Champions League semi-final first leg tie on Tuesday. Benzema has been in the form of his life for the Los Blancos, having netted 39 times in 40 appearances across all competitions this season so far and he is certainly going to be the man to watch out for at the Etihad Stadium. The Frenchman has already scored 12 Champions League goals this campaign, only behind Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewamndowski, who has netted 13 times.

Guardiola said: “The two games against Sporting, first game against Atletico we played to not concede. The second leg we couldn’t have conceded, they were better. We have to defend well, Benzema scores lot of goals in his career, fantastic player, we defend well, we will have to defend and create chances to score.”

Guardiola’s side are usually known for their attacking process, but in the quarter-final second leg tie at Wanda Metropolitano, Man city put up a disciplined defensive display to earn a goalless draw and advance to the last-4 with a 1-0 aggregate win.

But Real Madrid’s attacking lineup has much more quality and is very lethal. The likes of Benzema and Vinicius Junior have formed a potent strike-partnership. Benzema sits on top of the La Liga top-scorers list with 25 scalps to his name.

Benzema has played a pivotal role in Madrid’s run to the semi-finals. The Frenchman netted two hat-tricks in the last two rounds of the competition, knocking out Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. The 34-year-old has scored seven times in his last three Champions League games.

Man City midfielder Rodri has commented on Benzema after the 5-1 win over Watford. The Spaniard said: “He is in the best moment of his career. He understands every part of the game and is scoring goals, important goals. I would say f***ing hell, this guy is amazing in every game and he not only scores goals but makes his team feel comfortable with the ball and as [Carlo] Ancelotti says he is the modern striker in football so we have to be aware of him and all of Real Madrid.” .
