Chelsea’s star defender Antonio Rudiger is all set to join Spanish giants Real Madrid at the end of the current season. It is according to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The German centre-back will be out of contract in the summer, meaning he can already start discussing a contract with other clubs. Due to the sanction in place on Chelsea football club, they were not able to do much to hold on to their main defender. He was linked with several clubs from the Premier League to other leagues. However, it now looks like Real Madrid have won the race to secure the services of the centre-back.

The contract, however, is not yet finalised with the La Liga club because some final details must still need to be worked out. However, the belief is that his most likely destination for next season is Santiago Bernabeu. A tweet from Romano read: “Real Madrid have reached verbal agreement with Antonio Rüdiger. Contract not signed yet – but Real Madrid are now closing on Rüdiger deal on a free: here we go soon! It’s gonna be a long-term deal. Final details to be discussed soon, before signing the contract.”

Rudiger to sign four-year contract with Real Madrid: Report

The Chelsea centre-back, who will be out of contract in the summer, can now join any team on a free transfer. Romano further said that the 29-year-old defender would sign a four-year contract with Real Madrid. In another tweet, he wrote, “The agreement between Toni Rüdiger and Real Madrid has been reached on a four year deal, valid until June 2026. #RealMadrid It’s matter of final details before signing the contracts. No official announcement before the end of the season, even if Toni will sign in May.”

After moving to Stamford Bridge from Roma in 2017, Rudiger initially took time to find his feet. Even though his potential was there for everyone to see, the 29-year-old lacked a bit of consistency, something he found when Thomas Tuchel took charge of the club in January 2021. He then went on to win the Champions League title last season with Chelsea. However, in this campaign, he was part of the Blues side that was beaten by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the competition.

Thomas Tuchel: Antonio Rudiger wants to leave

On Sunday, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Antonio Rudiger wants to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires. “The situation is that he wants to leave the club. He informed me of this in a private talk,” Tuchel told Sky Sports. “We gave everything – me and the club – but we could not fight anymore because of the actions. Without the sanctions we would at least be able to carry on fighting, but our hands are tied. We don’t take it personally. It is his decision.

“He is a key figure and will stay that way until the end of the season. But it is disappointing. We will miss him a lot. He gives courage in the dressing room. The kind everyone is afraid of, but the kind to play 50-55 games at an outstanding level. He is a top defender in the last one-and-a-half years for me. We then need to find another solution.”
