Luton Town supporters would have been delighted to hear that their star defender Tom Lockyer has put pen to paper on a new deal. He has been one of the fan favourites for a while and has consistently performed at the top level. The Wales defender played a big part in helping Luton Town gain an unlikely promotion to the Premier League last time out. They had beaten Coventry City in the Championship playoff final to seal a ticket to the English top flight.

Tom Lockyer is understandably eager to compete in the Premier League and cannot wait to return to action. “I’m so happy. I’d really like to build something special here at Luton Town. I’ve got an incredible relationship with the fans, the manager, all the boys. I love the club and I love being here. It’s incredible what we achieved last season, to have the chance to play with Luton in the Premier League will be something that’s really special to me,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

It is to be noted that in 2014-15, Tom Lockyer was competing in the National League with Bristol Rovers. To see him move from there to the Premier League is an incredible achievement. “My journey has been so similar to Luton’s. I beat the club by one year going from the Conference to the Premier League, so I just feel like we were meant to be. If you look at the journey we’ve both been on, we came together at the same time and I felt at home instantly. I feel like this is the place for me.”

It is also important to note that Luton Town fans were dealt with a major blow when Lockyer had collapsed at the start of the playoff final against Coventry City. He had to be carried off on a stretcher. Then the defender spent few days in hospital and underwent an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation. However, he is now fit and cannot wait to get started with the pre-season training. “After what happened at the end of the season, I want to thank everyone for the messages of love and support,” he added.

“They helped me so much, but now I feel refreshed and recharged, ready to look forward to the Premier League season. It’s every boy’s dream and I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Premier League, but when you’re playing in Non-League and League Two, you don’t even think about it because it feels so far away. For it to have actually happened is quite incredible and I can’t wait to get going again now.”
