Lazio earned a spot in the Champions League group stage courtesy of securing second-place finish in the 2022-23 Serie A standings. However, the Eagles haven’t made the best of starts to their 2023-24 campaign , recording three defeats and a win from four top tier games so far. Their lone success came against the reigning champions Napoli at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on September 2 thanks to goals from Luis Alberto and Daichi Kamada either side of Piotr Zielinski’s equaliser. But Maurizio Sarri’s side couldn’t build on that success, losing out to Juventus last time out despite the fact that Alberto got on the scoresheet.
Atletico, on the other hand, began their new campaign with a 3-1 victory over newly promoted Granada in the La Liga, before sharing the spoils against Real Betis, and then headed into the international break on the back of a thumping 7-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Colchoneros recorded their biggest ever win in the Spanish top flight thanks to Alvaro Morata’s brace and one goal each from Antoine Griezmann, Memphis Depay, Nahuel Molina, Angel Correa and Marcos Llorente. But Atleti resumed their season with a shock 3-0 loss away to Valenica on Saturday. Indios finished bottom of their Champions League group last term and with a derby day to come next weekend, the coming days could prove crucial in terms of setting the tone for the months ahead.
