Juventus beat champions Inter Milan 3-2, remain in contention for UEFA Champions League spot

The five goal thriller between Juventus and Inter Milan was filled with action, drama and controversies- three penalties, two red cards, own goal and multiple VAR intervention's.

Juventus beat Serie A champions Inter Milan 3-2 at home on Saturday to stay in contention for a top four finish. The match was marred by VAR intervention, penalties, red cards and seven goals. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Romelu Lukaku leveled the score for Inter Milan through a penalty. Cuadrado gave Juventus the lead just before the interval. Georgio Chiellini’s own goal made it 2-2 before Cuadrado scored his second goal through a penalty

Georgio Chiellini was brought down by the Inter Milan defenders. The referee pointed to the spot after VAR intervention. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the spot-kick. His first attempt was saved but the 36-year old striker scored of the rebound. It was his 29th goal of the League campaign.

Romelu Lukaku equalized for the away side in the 35th minute. Lautaro Martinez was fouled by Juventus defender De Light. The Referee again pointed to the spot following VAR intervention. The Belgian striker converted the kick to take his tally to 23 in the Serie A campaign. Just before the interval, Cuadrado fired in a bullet shot from the edge of the penalty area to make the score 2-1 in favour of the home side.

Inter Milan leveled the score at 2-2 in the 83rd minute courtesy of a Chiellini own goal. Nicola Barella’s in-swinging cross from the left flank deflected of an off balance Chiellini to go inside the Juventus goal. The goal stood after the VAR check denied any foul on Chiellini.

Juan Cuadrado was brought down inside the penalty box by substitute Ivan Perisic. The Colombian winger stepped up and slotted the ball into the net in the 88th minute to ensure the crucial three points for Juventus.

Juventus played most of the second half with 10-man following Rodrigo Betancur receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Lukaku in the 55th minute. Both teams finished with 10 players after Brozovic was shown his second yellow card for a foul on Cuadrado.

The win helped Andrea Pirlo’s side into fourth spot with 75 points from 37 games. Juventus are two points ahead of fifth placed Napoli and level on points with AC Milan. Both of them have a game in hand. Napoli can push Juventus back to fifth spot with a victory against Fiorentina on Sunday.

Juventus needs to win its last match against Bologna on May 23. They will hope either AC Milan or Napoli falter in their remaining matches to secure a Champion League spot. Inter Milan had already won the Serie A with four games remaining. In the other match of the day, Atalanta beat Genoa 4-3 to cement their second spot in Serie A.
