Qatar will be looking to become the first team since Japan (2000 & 2004) to lift successive AFC Asian Cup titles when they take on surprise package Jordan in the summit clash at Lusail Stadium on Saturday. The Jordanian stunned South Korea 2-0 to progress to their first ever Asian Cup final, while the Maroons got the better of Iran 3-2 in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Qataris are the first hosts nation to reach the final of the tournament since Australia in 2015 and are looking to become the eight host country to lift the trophy.

Jordan are undoubtedly the dark horse in this edition of the Asian Cup, having progressed to the knockout round as one of the four best third-placed sides in the group stage, and then overcame the likes of Iraq, Tajikistan and South Korea to reach the final. The Chivalrous went into their semi-final tie against South Korea as underdogs, but displayed an exuberant brand of counter-attacking football to prevail over Jurgen Klinsman’s side. Hussein Ammouta’s side had just 30% possession, but registered seven shots on target, compared to zero efforts on target by the Taegeuk Warriors. Both goals were scored in the second-half thanks to Yazan Al-Naimat and Musa Al Taamari.
Qatar, on the other hand, had to dig deep to get the better of Iran last time out. A fourth-minute strike by the Iranians put the hosts in the back foot, but they fought back to level the score thanks to Jassem Gaber Abdulsallam’s 17th-minute effort. Though the Maroons took the lead through Akram Afif’s stunning strike two minutes from the break, Team Melli made it 2-2 eight minutes into the second-half. The Iranians looked the better side in the second period, but Tintin Marquez’s men scored the winner against the run of play, thanks to Almoez Ali’s fine finish from inside the box in the 82nd-minute. With a win of Saturday, Qatar will become just the fourth nation in the history of this competition to retain the title.
