Two sides looking to secure top spot in Group D of the UEFA Champions League will be up against each other on Tuesday night as Inter Milan play host to Real Sociedad at San Siro. The hosts are currently occupying second spot in the table, having taken 11 points from five group games, level on points with leaders Txuri-Urdin, but separated by goal-difference, and seven clear of third placed RB Salzburg. Meanwhile, the reverse fixture between these two sides back in September ended in a 1-1 draw after Brais Mendez’s fourth-minute opener was canceled out by Inter striker Lautaro Martinez three minutes from time.

Inter are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 4-0 Serie A win over Udinese at the weekend thanks to one goal each from Hakan Calhanoglu, Federico Dimarco, Marcus Thuram and L. Martinez. The result extended their unbeaten run to 13 games across all competitions, recording ten wins in the period. Meanwhile, Simone Inzaghi’s men are currently occupying top spot in the Italian top flight standings, having collected 38 points from 15 league games. Nerazzuri have already qualified for the last-16 stage of the Champions League and they will be hoping to secure top spot and avoid Group C winners Real Madrid in the knockout round tie. Real Sociedad, on the other hand, thrashed Villarreal 3-0 in the La Liga on Saturday. The Basque outfit are now sitting at the sixth spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having taken 29 points from 16 league games, five adrift of the top four. The Royal’s last continental outing ended in a goalless draw against RB Salzburg towards the end of last month, while Imanol Alguacil’s men have won three of their five Group D games so far, including a double over Benfica.
