Prior to the World Cup break, Inter were in stunning form, having won six of their last seven league games. Their last competitive game against Atalanta in November ended in a thrilling 3-2 victory courtesy of a brace from Edin Dzeko and an own goal by Jose Luis palomino. After that, Simone Inzaghi’s side resumed their preparations for the next half of the campaign with a thumping victory against Maltese club Gzira United FC on monday. Raoul Belanova, Kristian Asllani, Hakan Calhanoglu, Robin Gosens, Federico Dimarco and Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted for Nerazzurri. Though without several stars due to injury and the ongoing World Cup participation, coach Inzaghi has named a 27-member squad to focus on fitness ahead of Serie A restart in January against league-leaders Napoli.
RB Salzburg, on the other hand, have most of their star players available as very few are away in Qatar. Meanwhile head coach Matthias Jaissle has included several youngsters from feeder club Liefering, where he was formerly manager. Salzburg’s last outing against Austria Klagenfurt in November ended in a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of Benjamin Sesko’s 55th-minute goal. The result helped the Red Bulls to extend their lead at the top of the table to six points.
Although many of the top players are away on international duty, Inzaghi still has a strong squad at his disposal. The likes of Milan Skriniar, Edin Dzeko, Alessandro Bastoni, Calhanoglu, Samir Handanovic and Robin Gosens among others were involved in the match against Gzira. Argentina striker Joaquin Correa is sidelined with an achilles injury, while Matteo Darmian and Danilo D’Amnrosio are not available due to various reasons. As for Salzburg, in-form striker Benjamin Sesko is likely to lead the line, with Sekou Koita in support. The likes of Lucas Gourna-Douth, Oumar Solet and Andreas Ulmer have not rejoined the squad.
