Mumbai City FC has made their first big signing for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season by bringing in playmaker Greg Stewart from Jamshedpur FC, according to a report by Times Of India. The Islanders won the League Winners Shield and the ISL trophy double in the 2020-21, but the defending champions only finished fifth this season, three points adrift of the play-off spot. MCFC made an impressive start to their title defence but faltered in between. Meanwhile Jamshedpur won the League winners shield this season and Stewart won the ISL Best Player award for his stellar performances.

Stewart had a stunning 2021-22 ISL season

The Scottish attacking midfielder finished the 2021-22 ISL season with a whopping 10 goals and 10 assists in 21 appearances. He played a pivotal role in JFC’s title triumph, produced 61 shots and 73 crosses, with an average of over 40 passes per match throughout the season.  The Red Miners finished the league season with a record 43 points from 20 games, conceding the least number of goals (21) and scoring the second most number of goals (42). However, Owen Coyle’s team failed to make it to the final of ISL, after losing 2-1 to Kerala Blasters FC in the two-legged semi-final tie.

Stewart scored a world-class free-kick goal against Kerala Blasters

The former Rangers FC player scored some stunning goals to light up the competition and grab the attention of the world. The 32-year-old stunning free-kick goal against Kerala Blasters in December was one of the best goals of the 2021-22 season. Given his stunning sebut season in India, it was not surprising that JFC were keen to retain Stewart. The Red Miners tried their best to convince him, but with Coyle, who had moved to Queens Park, Stewart had decided to make the switch to Mumbai.

Stewart’s arrival will boost Mumbai City FC

Although no official announcement is made, if the move is completed it’s going to be a huge boost to the Islanders, who recently created history in the AFC Champions League by becoming the first Indian club to win a group match. Des Buckingham’s side finished their maiden Asian campaign with two victories and a draw. Stewart is a big, strong lad who has great upper body strength and is also pretty good with the ball at his feet. He has good set-piece taking ability.
