Houston Dynamo’s Leagues Cup campaign was far from convincing as they reached the last-16 stage without winning a single match in regulation time. When it comes to the round of 16 clash against Charlotte on August 7, Oranje Crush took an early lead through Corey Baird, but Patrick Agyemang’s 80th-minute equaliser and an own goal by Micael a minute later helped the Crown progress to the last eight. Meanwhile, El Naranja have recorded only eight wins from their 23 league-games this season, and their last MLS-victory came against San Jose Earthquakes on June 21. Houston are winless in their last five league-matches. Despite the poor run of form, Ben Olsen’s side are firmly in contention to challenge for a final series qualification spot, which is a massive step forward for the club as they finished each of their last three seasons in the bottom two in the Western Conference.
Portland Timbers, on the other hand, secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew in their last MLS game on July 16. The Timbers secured all three points thanks to Dairon Asprilla’s first-half brace and Sebastian Blanco’s winner ten minutes from time. The result ended their five-match winless run, and then Portland went into the Leagues Cup, defeating the likes of San Jose and Tigers UANL before being eliminated by Monterrey. Meanwhile, the Timbers’ last encounter against the Houston in June last year ended in a 2-1 victory courtesy of Santiago Moreno’s first-half brace.
