The Lusail  Stadium will play host to the mouthwatering World Cup 2022 final between Argentina and the reigning champions France on Sunday afternoon as the main event of the programme. Les Bleus, who secured their spot in the final with a 2-0 victory over African trailblazers Morocco in the semi-finals, will take the field on the Lusail turf as the first champions in 24 years. With a 3-0 victory over Croatia in the final four, Lionel Scaloni’s team prevented them from reaching the championship game twice in a row. As a result, the attention of the pre-match build-up has naturally been on one player.

France are aiming to be just the third team in the history of the competition to defend their title. The other two were Italy and Brazil. A world cup title defence is something unheard of in the modern game. Since 2010, the defending champions have always said their goodbyes in the group stage. France was the first defending champion in over a decade to make it into the knockout stage of the competition. With players like Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud, it is safe to say that Didier Deschamps’ men are within a shout of winning the title. Here is a look at the players who could make a difference.

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe has been on an absolute tear in the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup. With five goals already to his name, he is the joint top scorer at the tournament with Lionel Messi. The Frenchman will become a double world cup winner at only the age of 24 if his team manages to beat Messi and co. If that is to happen, it is safe to say that Mbappe will have a key role to play. The PSG striker has a ton of pace at his disposal and will undoubtedly give his all in the match.

Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud is another senior player in the competition who is in outstanding form, much like Lionel Messi. It will be interesting to see how he performs in the final against Argentina’s defence after scoring four goals already, including a crucial header against England that guaranteed France’s place in the semi-final. Don’t be shocked if Giroud scores a game-winning goal to give his country the championship yet another time.

Antoinne Griezmann

Griezmann, 31, has impressed everyone for France at this year’s World Cup. Previously a goal-scoring winger, the Atletico Madrid forward has improved his defensive fortitude in addition to his artistic talent. Messi could engage in a duel between Argentina’s attack lines.
