FC Koln were on the verge of taking all three points against Bayern in the reverse fixture back in January courtesy of Ellyes Skhiri’s fourth-minute opener, but they were forced to share the spoils after Joshua Kimmich's 90th-minute effort.
Bayern Munich travel to RheinEnergie Stadion to take on FC Koln on Saturday knowing that only a victory will keep their slim hopes of retaining the Bundesliga title alive. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at home to RB Leipzig allowed Borussia Dortmund to overtake the Bavarians into the summit of the German top flight standings. As of now, the visitors are occupying second spot in the table, with 68 points to their name from 33 games, just two adrift of BVB. The hosts meanwhile, are sitting at the tenth position in the standings, with 42 points to their name.

Bayern suffered only their fifth league-defeat of the season against Leipzig last time out, despite taking the lead through Serge Gnabry’s 25th-minute effort. The result proved to be a huge blow to their title-hopes as Dortmund thrashed Augsburg 3-0 to climb to the summit of the table. For the first time since the 2011-12 campaign, the Bavarians enter the final matchday of a Bundesliga season not sitting at the top of the standings. Thomas Tuchel’s side head into Saturday’s crucial contest having dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the second half of the season (13). The 32-time champions need to secure their 21st top flight victory of the season against FC Koln and hope for Dortmund to drop points against Mainz to have any chance of retaining the Bundesliga crown.
FC Koln, on the other hand, have experienced a very inconsistent 2022-23 league campaign, having recorded 10 wins, 12 draws and 11 defeats from 33 Bundesliga games. The Billy Goats shared the polis against Werder Bremen last time out despite taking the lead through Steffen Tigges’s 36th-minute opener. Ten points collected from their last five games as helped Steffen Baumgart’s men to climb away from the relegation picture and into the mid-table.
FC Koln were on the verge of taking all three points against Bayern in the reverse fixture back in January courtesy of Ellyes Skhiri’s fourth-minute effort, but they were ultimately forced to settle for a draw after Joshua Kimmich scored a 90th-minute equaliser. Prior to that, the Bavarians recorded nine consecutive competitive wins against the Billy Goats. Unsurprisingly, Bayern have prevailed 55 times in 103 encounters across all competitions against Effzeh, compared to just 24 wins for the Billy Goats, with their last success in a competitive match coming way back in 2009. Meanwhile, Bayern thrashed FC Koln 4-0 in their previous visit to RheinEnergie Stadion in January 2022 courtesy of Robert Lewandowski’s hat-trick and one goal from Corentin Tolisso.
