Coventry secured a place in the Championship playoffs courtesy of finishing at the fifth spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 70 points from 46 games. After playing out a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough at Coventry Building Society Arena in the first leg of their semi-final playoff tie, the Sky Blues travelled to Riverside Stadium, knowing that the winner will go through to the final at Wembley Stadium. Despite recording just 32% of ball possession, Mark Robins’ men managed to find the back of the net through Gustavo Hamer’s 57th-minute effort and thereby are now just one win away from ending their 22-year absence from the top flight. Meanwhile, Coventry travel to Wembley on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run, scoring 12 goals and conceding just five in the period.
Luton, on the other hand, suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the first leg of their semi-final playoff tie at Stadium of Light, despite taking the lead through Elijah Adebayo’s 11th-minute effort. However, the Hatters produced an impressive performance in the home-leg and secured a 2-0 victory thanks to first-half goals from Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer. It was Luton’s ninth victory from their last 16 outings, while losing only once in the process. Rob Edwards, who was appointed as the manager of Luton in November last year, has a done a fabulous job to take them to where they are now, having recorded sixteen wins and just five defeats from 31 contests in charge.
