Brazil edged past England in a much-awaited international friendly this weekend. In this international break, it was the game many were looking forward to. Despite these two sides missing some key players, this contest was expected to be high on quality due to the large pool of world-class players available in their ranks. As expected, it was a tightly fought contest with very little to separate either side. Both defences did a good job to keep each other at bay for most of the game.

However, teenage sensation Endrick scored the only goal of the game with ten minutes left to go and secured the win for Brazil. While England might have been disappointed with the result, the main purpose of the friendly was all about giving gametime to the fringe players in their squad. With Euro 2024 set to happen in summer, this could very well be the last chance for Gareth Southgate to experiment with his squad and have a look at some of the new players.

Update on Harry Kane and Kyle Walker’s injuries

Most of this break was focused on players who were out injured. One such player is England’s captain Harry Kane. After picking up an injury with Bayern Munich recently, the star striker was not involved in the match, as he saw the action from the sidelines. Providing an update on him, Southgate, quoted on skysports.com, said in his post-match press conference, “Kane will go back [to Germany]. He won’t be fit for Tuesday.”

Both the player and club will hope that it is not a serious injury. However, it is unclear at this point when he will return to action. Another player who suffered an injury concern is Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker. He was substituted in the first half due to an injury, allowing Ezri Konsa to make his debut. “He’s not sure if it’s just tightness. We’ll know more in the next 36 hours,” Southgate said on Walker’s injury.

Shifting the attention back to the match, Southgate was happy with a lot of things England did despite ending on the wrong end of the scoreline. “I was pleased. Clearly we don’t like losing football matches but I thought there were a lot of very good individual performances from players who have hardly played for England. More regular players were very good. We had as many attempts on goal as they have and the difference was one moment. There were a couple of great quality passes [from Brazil]. You’re talking about players at the very highest level of the game,” he explained.

The head coach added: “You’re going to have moments where your keeper has to make a save or defender block. We had those moments at the other end. If it finished a draw it would have been fair. We’re playing a top team. Chances are going to be limited. Perhaps we had the chances from set-pieces to capitalise on one of them. I was pleased with the players that went in. We need to find out about them. I thought Ollie did a good job. Didn’t get that clear chance on goal you might want. A lot of his work was very good.”
