Dani Alves, the ex-Barcelona player, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison following his conviction for sexual assault.
Ex-Barcelona footballer and one of the most decorated player in the history of football, Dani Alves has been reportedly convicted of sexual assault at a nightclub and has received a jail sentence of four years and six months. The former Brazilian international, who was arrested last year, had an illustrious career, making over 400 appearances for Barcelona across two stints, winning six league titles and three Champions Leagues.
Additionally, he was also a part of Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad. Despite his achievements, his contract with Mexican team Pumas UNAM was terminated in January 2023. According to many reports, Alves has been in custody since his arrest.
On Thursday, the highest court in Catalonia reportedly found former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at a Barcelona nightclub in 2022. He has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison, and the court has mandated that Alves has to pay €150,000 ($162,990) to the victim.
“The sentence considers that it has been proven that the victim did not consent, and that there is evidence, in addition to the testimony of the plaintiff, to consider the rape proven,” the court said in a statement.
Alves’ attorney, Ines Guardiola, has confirmed that they will appeal the sentence. In her statement to the press, she stated, “Currently, I can only inform you that we plan to challenge the verdict. I maintain my belief in Mr. Alves’ innocence. While I need to review the sentence, I can affirm that we will file an appeal.”
