Empoli will host Juventus in a Serie A fixture at Carlo Castellani Stadium on Monday evening. Juve are occupying second spot in the Italian top flight standings, having collected 69 points from 35 games, five clear of fifth-placed AC Milan. Empoli, meanwhile, are sitting at the 14th position, with 39 points to their name, nine away from the relegation zone. Defeat to Hellas Verona on Saturday has ensured Empoli’s survival in the top flight for one more season, while Juve’s top-four finish is still not sealed because of the probable point-deduction hanging over their heads.

Juve’s chances of securing a title this season ended on Thursday night as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Sevilla in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Although Dusan Vlahovic’s 65th-minute opener gave Max Allegri’s side a 2-1 lead in the tie, Suso’s stunning equaliser and Erik Lamela’s extra-time winner ended the Italian outfit’s European dreams. Having been humbled in the Champions League group stage, eliminated from the Coppa Italia and failed to compete with Napoli for the Scudetto, it has been yet another trophyless season for the Old Lady. Bianconeri have recorded 21 league-wins this term and their latest success came against Cremonese almost a week ago thanks to two unanswered goals from Nicolo Fagioli and Gleison Bremer. Meanwhile, Juve’s away-form in the league hasn’t been very great this term, having taken just 27 points from a possible 51 so far.

Empoli, on the other hand, have done decently well at Carlo Castellani Stadium this season, having recorded seven wins, four draws and six defeats from 17 league-games. Last time out, the Blues earned a dramatic 1-1 draw against an already relegated Sampdoria on the road courtesy of Roberto Piccoli’s equaliser three minutes into the injury time. The result extended their unbeaten run to three games, winning two matches in the process. Gli Azzurri have won nine league-games this term and their last success came against Salernitana almost two weeks ago courtesy of goals from Nicolo Cambiaghi and Francesco Caputo.
