Shamrock Rovers will be looking to strengthen their hold on the top spot in the League of Ireland Premier Division when they travel to Dundalk on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against St. Patrick’s Athletic on Monday, while the Rovers secured a narrow 1-0 win over second-placed Derry City. The victory helped the visitors to extend their lead at the top of the standings to seven points, having collected 46 points from 21 matches so far. The Lilywhites, meanwhile, are sitting at the fourth position in the Irish top flight table, with 36 points to their name.

Dundalk came-from-behind to earn a point against St Patrick’s on Monday thanks to Daniel Kelly’s equaliser six minutes from time. Prior to that, the Lilywhites secured three successive wins against the likes of UC Dublin (4-1), Cork City (1-2) and Drogheda United (2-1). The Railwaymen’s last success came against Drogheda at United Park courtesy of Patrick Hoban’s late double. It was their tenth league-win of the season. Meanwhile, Stephen O’Donnell’s men have been pretty solid at home this term, having lost only two of their 11 league-fixtures at Oriel Park, while recording five home league-wins. In fact, they are heading into the match on the back of a six-game unbeaten run in front of their own supporters in the top flight, while taking 12 points in the process.
Rovers, on the other hand, boast the best away-record in the Irish top flight this season, taking 22 points from a possible 33 so far. Hoops secured their 13th league-win against their nearest challengers Derry last Monday thanks to Rory Gaffney’s lone goal inside the opening 27 minutes. The result extended their unbeaten run to five games, winning four matches and keeping as many clean sheets in the period. Shamrock have won the Irish top division on 20 previous occasions, which is a record, including in the last three seasons, and it does appear that they will take some stopping this time around.
Dundalk probable starting lineup: Shepperd, Davies, Boyle, Annesley, McCourt, Sloggett, Malley, Doyle, O’Kane, Hoban, Kelly
Shamrock Rovers probable starting lineup: Pohls, Cleary, Pico, Hoar, Gannon, Byrne, Poom, Towell, Kavanagh, Kenny, Gaffney
