Arsenal have made it two wins from two in the new Premier League season after overcoming Crystal Palace in the most difficult of circumstances. The Gunners ended the match with 10-men but that did not stop them from preserving the 1-0 lead they had gained from Martin Odegaard’s well-taken penalty on 53 minutes. Takehiro Tomiyasu was sent off for the visitors mid-way through the second half following two bookable offences.

That sending off did not deter the visiting side as they held on to the three points. This was followed by the opening weekend victory over Nottingham Forest 2-1. Prior to that Arsenal had beaten Manchester City on penalties to lift the Community Shield. Their supporters have every reason to be happy about the start they have made to the season and will hope for more of the same in the coming weeks.

Coming back to the Monday night Premier League victory over Crystal Palace, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was happy with the way the team adapted to being down to 10 men in the second half. “I’m so happy to win, always very happy to win, but very happy in the way we won with 11 players and 10 players, and the way the team adapted, and how much they wanted the win,” he was quoted as saying by Arsenal.com after the match.

Mikel Arteta on the changes

“The contributions from the players on the bench and the way they changed the game straight away when they came on. It doesn’t matter the circumstances, it doesn’t matter the decisions, we keep going. We want to win and find a way to win it. They absolutely did the job, they didn’t concede anything, apart from one cross – I think it was a wide free-kick and they had a volley, but after that nothing. And we had some good moments as well when we changed the momentum of the game, so I’m really happy.”

It is never easy to get the maximum points at Selhurst Park. With the crowd playing its part and supporting the home side throughout the game, it was always going to be difficult. However, Arteta was happy with how his team dealt with the situation. “To get a clean sheet away from home with the experience, you realise how important it’s going to be,” the Arsenal manager said.

He further added: “We were really solid again, we conceded very few situations to Palace, which is very difficult in this ground. They are a really good team. You see the atmosphere from the beginning, among the night, it doesn’t get more traditional, or more English probably than this, but again delighted to win the game.”
