Liverpool will be keen to put behind the disappointment of last season and start fighting for major trophies this around. The 2022-23 campaign did not go according to script for the Reds, as they failed in quite a few of their targets. They not only finished outside the top four places in the Premier League table but were also eliminated in earlier rounds of cup competitions. It is something Jurgen Klopp and his troops will be eager to turn it around in the upcoming season.
The pre-season training has started at the AXA Training Centre and a good number of Liverpool players have already reported back for these sessions. Exciting Dutch forward Cody Gakpo is one of them. After arriving in January, Gakpo has already shown glimpses of his ability. However, there is still a lot more to come from the talented frontman. “Very excited [to be back]. I think first of all it’s nice to see everybody after a short break,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“I think everybody is excited to go again and we want to show everybody what we’ve got. I think everybody has the same mindset at the moment: we really want to achieve something this year again. That’s the target and we will train hard for that. We ended, I think, the campaign pretty good with a nice run of winning games, and I hope we start there again and do that for the whole season: win prizes together and show everybody how good we are.”
Gakpo then outlined his ambitions for the upcoming season in the Premier League and other cup competitions. “For me personally, [my aims are] just working hard, keep improving and helping the team as much as I can: to really have an impact by scoring goals, giving assists, helping the team, working hard with the result of winning games. In the end we win as a team and hopefully we are going to win some prizes again,” he elaborated.
In the ongoing transfer window, Liverpool have already made two exciting additions – Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. It is in midfield where the Reds needed reinforcements and it is indeed there, they signed players. Speaking about the new signings, Gakpo said, “Very pleased [they are here]. I think everybody knows that they are very good players and I’m really looking forward to playing with them together.”
Meanwhile, reliable Liverpool holding midfielder Fabinho is happy that Liverpool have made the new additions in the centre of the pitch. “We lost, I think, three midfield players that were really important for us in the last maybe five, six years. It’s good to bring some good players in that position because we will need [them],” he had earlier told the club’s website.
“In the way we play, the intensity we play, we always need not just three or four but maybe six players in this position [in the squad]. So yes, it’s good to have these two players with us now. We played against them already, so we know how good they are. It’s good to have them in the team.”
