Although the Pirates were not favourites to prevail in their opening fixtures against Real Sociedad (1-0) and Osasuna (2-0), Sergo Gonzalez’ side had opportunities to get at least a point on the board. In their recent outing against Osasuna, Ezequiel Avila opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Kike Garcia doubled the lead once against from a spot kick. Meanwhile, the Pirates finished the match with 10 men as Tomas Alarcon received a red card, fourteen minutes from time.
Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand kicked off their league campaign with a goalless draw against Mallorca on August 15. Esrnesto Valverde’s side were clearly the dominant side , creating 23 goal-scoring chances, while recording six attempts on goal, compared to just two by Mallorca. However, Los Leones bounced back with a 1-0 win over Valencia a week later. Alejandro Remiro’s 43rd minute goal earned three points for Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Barria.
