Burnley will be locking horns against Rochdale in a pre-season friendly on Friday. Both the sides will be looking for starting their preparations for the 2022/23 pre-season. Burnley will have unfamiliar roads ahead of them having been relegated to the second tier of English football, the Championship after spending the last six years in the Premier League. Burnley will be preparing themselves for a new journey with former Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany taking charge of the coaching duties at the club from the upcoming season. The Clarets endured a disappointing campaign last time around as they couldn’t escape relegation, a scene which led to the sacking of long time manager, Sean Dyche. They will be expected to challenge for promotion back to Premier League albeit without some of their key players like Nick Pope, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski. A good pre-season run will be key for getting some early season momentum.

As for Rochdale, it was another disappointing campaign last term as they finished in the bottom half of the table at the 18th spot in England’s fourth division. Consequently, they will have to spend another season in the League Two. They have already confirmed subsequent pre-season friendlies with Chester, Darlington, Scunthorpe United and Port Vale. Following departures of players like Max Clark and O’Connell, Rochdale have got their work cut out ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Possible Lineups

As is common in a pre-season friendly, both the teams will be looking to providing opportunities to players from their respective academies and youth setups. Apart from this, Burnley will be without the services of Erik Pieters and Matej Vydra both of whom are suffering from injury woes and won’t be rushed in a friendly game. While for Rochdale, there are reportedly no fitness issues and players including Cameron John, Richard O’ Donnell could get some minutes for their new club.
