Bournemouth will host Stoke City in the third round of their EFL Cup tie at Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of 3-1 defeats in their league-fixtures at the weekend, with the hosts losing out to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, while Stoke suffered a Championship-loss against Hull City. The Cherries have three quarter-final appearances in this tournament from 2014-15 to 2018-19, but they suffered a second round exit to second tier side Norwich City last term, after being thrashed 6-0 at Carrow Road. The visitors, on the other hand, reached the last-16 stage of the competition in the 2021-22 campaign, before being put to the sword 2-1 by Brentford.

Bournemouth secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Swansea City in the second round of the EFL Cup towards the end of last month, thanks to second-half efforts from David Brooks and Hamed Traore, and Ryan Christie’s dramatic winner a minute into the injury time. Meanwhile, it was their first win of the campaign from seven games across all competitions. When it comes to the English top flight, the Cherries have recorded three wins and as many defeats from six league-games so far, and their most recent outing against Brighton ended in a defeat despite taking the lead through Dominic Solanke’s 25th-minute effort. With just three league-points taken so far, Bournemouth are languishing at the 17th spot in the Premier League standings, just two points clear of the drop zone.
Stoke City, on the other hand, also haven’t made a great start to their 2023-24 Championship season, collecting seven points from eight games to be sitting at the 20th position, only two points above the drop zone. The Potters’ last victory came against Rotherham (6-1) in the second round of the EFL Cup thanks to Josh Laurent’s brace and one goal each from Wouter burger, Ryan Mmaee, Tyrese Campbell and Mehdi Leris. Since then, Alex Neil’s side have lost three and drawn one of their last four outings in the second tier. Stoke suffered their fifth defeat of the season against Hull last time out despite the fact that Andre Vidigal got on the scoresheet.
