Borussia Dortmund will host FC Copenhagen in their first group-stage match of the new Champions League campaign at Westfalenstadion on Tuesday. The hosts secured a spot among Europe’s elite by finishing second in the Bundesliga standings last term. Copenhagen, meanwhile, overcame Trabzonspor over two legs in the playoff round. Dortmund are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Hoffenheim in a domestic league fixture last Saturday, while the Danish outfit got the better of Silkeborg with an identical scoreline, a day earlier.

Dortmund have made an impressive start to their 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign, registering four wins from their opening five games to be sitting at the second position, level on points with leaders SC Freiburg. In their latest outing against Hoffenheim, Marco Reus’ lone strike in the 16th-minute was enough to separate the two sides and secure all three points for BVB. The German outfit could only finish third in their Champions League group last term. And then, lost to Rangers in the Europa League last-32 stage.
Copenhagen, on the other hand, earned a spot in the Champions League playoff round by winning the 2021-22 Superliga title. In the playoff round, the Danish outfit secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Trabzonspor to progress to the group stages of the competition for the first time since the 2016-17 season. Meanwhile the Lions haven’t had a great start to their Superliga campaign, registering just four wins from eight games to be sitting at the sixth pot. In their recent outing against Silkeborg, Viktor Claesson’s lone goal, five minute from break, separated the two sides at Parken.

Dortmund’s Mahmoud Dahoud and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are sidelined with shoulder injuries. Modeste is likely to lead the line with Brandt, Reus and Hazard in support. Jude Bellingham and Ozcan are expected to pull the strings in the midfield. As for Copenhagen, Roony Bardghji and Kamil Grabara are unavailable for Tuesday’s game because of injuries. Andreas Cornelius could lead the line with Daramy and Claesson in support.
