FC Basel will host FC Tobol in the first leg of their Europa Conference League second qualification round at St Jakob-Park on Thursday. Both sides were involved in their respective league-fixtures at the weekend, with the hosts losing 2-1 to St. Gallen in their opening fixture of the 2023-24 Swiss Super League season, while Tobolyaki secured a 2-0 Kazakhstan Premier League victory over Okzhetpes. FCB earned a spot in the second round of the Conference League qualification after finishing fifth in the Swiss top flight standings last term, while the visitors, who had secured a third-place finish in the 2022 Kazakhstan top flight, got the better of FC Honka in the first round of qualification.

Basel, who have won 20 Swiss Super League titles with their latest league-triumph coming in the 2016-17 season, had a disastrous campaign last term, finishing outside the top four for the first time since the 1999. FCB collected 47 points from 36 league-games, three points outside fourth placed Luzern. Moreover, Rotblau haven’t made a great start to their league campaign this time around, losing to St. Gallen at the weekend, despite the fact that Fabian Frei got on the scoresheet. However, last season’s Conference League semi-finalists will be bidding to begin their European qualification campaign on a positive note and they are definitely the favourites to get the better of the Tobol on Thursday.
Tobol, on the other hand, failed to successfully defend their Kazakhstan Premier League title after finishing third in the standings last time out. Tobolyaki collected 47 points from 26 games, six points adrift of champions Astana. Meanwhile, this season, Tobolyakis are currently languishing at the fifth spot in the top flight standings, having pocketed 26 points from 15 games, 16 points away from the summit. On Sunday, Tobol recorded their eighth top league victory of the season thanks to two unanswered goals through Ramazan Orazov and Serikzan Muzhikov. Prior to that, Tobolyaki defeated Honka 2-1 on aggregate in the first round of the Conference League qualification thanks to Miljan Vukadinovic’s brace in the first leg at Ortaliq Stadion.
