Atletico Madrid will host Rayo Vallecano in a La Liga fixture at Metropolitano stadium on Tuesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, while Rayo Vallecano played out a goalless draw against Getafe on the same day. The victory helped Atletico to move to the third position in the standings, having collected 19 points from nine games, six points adrift of leaders Real Madrid and level with fourth-placed Real Betis. Vallecano, meanwhile, are sitting at the 10th spot, with 11 points.

Athletico produced a stunning defensive performance to edge past Athletic Club three days ago. Antonine Griezmann’s lone goal in the 47th-minute was enough to separate the two sides at San Mames Barria. The Frenchman’s winner came from Atletico’s only shot on target in the entire match. Diego Simeone’s side have now recorded six wins and one draw from nine La Liga games thus far. The Colchoneroa are unbeaten in the league since the Madrid derby in the middle of September.
Rayo Vallecano, on the other hand, have won three and drawn two of their nine league games thus far. Andoni Iraola’s side’s last win came against Elche (2-1), at home, early in October. The visitors took the lead through Lucas Boye’s 32nd-minute strike, before Sergio Camello leveled the score, eight minutes later. And then, just when it looked like the points would be shared, Unai Lopez found the back of the net, five minutes into the injury time, to help Rayo take all three points. After that, Las Franjirrojos lost 3-1 to Almeria.

Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak is doubtful for Tuesday’s game because of concussion, while Marcos Llorente and Felipe are sidelined with injuries. Last game’s goal-scorer Griezmann is expected to spearhead the attack alongside Alvaro Morata. As for Rayo, Ruben de Tomas and Anders Martin are nursing groin and shoulder injuries respectively. Veteran Radamel Falcao could lead the line with Palazon, Trejo and A Garcia in support.
