Two sides challenging for European spots will be up against each other on Saturday as Aston Villa welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Villa Park for a Premier League showdown. The hosts are currently occupying eighth spot in the English top flight standings, having collected 54 points from 35 games, while Spurs are sitting two places above Unai Emery’s side, separated by just three points and five adrift of the top five. Meanwhile, both clubs are heading into the match on the back of contrasting results last weekend, with Villa losing 1-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Tottenham secured a narrow 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa suffered their 13th league-defeat of the season against Wolves last Saturday courtesy of Toti Gomes’s lone goal inside the opening nine minutes at Molineux Stadium. It was Villa’s second consecutive defeat following a 10-game unbeaten run that included eight wins. Despite a pair of recent setbacks, a spot in the continental stage next season is not out of reach for Emery’s men. Villa have recorded 16 league-wins this season and their last success came against Fulham less than three weeks ago. Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s home-form off late has been brilliant, having won four back-to-back games, while scoring ten goals and conceding none during the period. Villa have taken 32 points from a possible 51 at Villa Park this season.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are heading into the match on the back of a eight-game winless run on the road across all competitions. Spurs have won only five league-games away from home this term and they have taken 20 points from 17 away-games so far. Nevertheless, Tottenham got the better of Crystal Palace last time out thanks to Harry Kane’s lone goal on the stroke of half time. It was their 17th top flight victory of the season and the result ended their four game winless run. The Lily Whites are currently trailing the top four by six points and a defeat on Saturday could end their Champions League qualification hopes. After traveling to West Midlands, Spurs will host Brentford before ending their campaign with a away-game against Leeds United.
