Trent Alexander-Arnold has often been considered by many as one of the gifted footballers around. He is only 24 years old and has already won almost everything at the club level. Playing predominantly as a right-back, Trent is known for his final third contribution. He is excellent in delivering long passes and crosses into the penalty box. However, the full-back has often been criticised for his defensive contributions.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp found a solution to this problem by pushing Trent Alexander-Arnold to a midfield position when they are in possession in the recently concluded season. England manager Gareth Southgate took it one step further by playing Trent as an outright midfielder in the recent international games and that decision worked wonders, with the Three Lions enjoying comfortable victories. His Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson became the latest player to have his say about Trent’s position change.

“Trent is Trent and that’s the biggest compliment I can pay him. He adapts to anything you ask of him, he’s still relatively young but he’s got a wise head on his shoulders and I think when you’re that technically gifted, you’ve got that much ability, you’ve got that much talent, then you can play in any position and he would make the most of it and more importantly he’s got that aggression and he’s got that will to succeed – and I think you’ve seen that,” he told Sky Sports.

‘Scary thing is that he’ll improve in that position’

“Obviously going away with England has been tough for him over the years. He’s probably not played as much as he wants, been left out of some squads and things like that, but I think maybe they’ve found a position for him and now that he can play there and learn in it still – and the scary thing is that he’ll improve in that position as well.”

Robertson is now looking forward to see where Trent will play for Liverpool in pre-season. “So, obviously that’s from an England point of view. We’re more worried about the Liverpool point of view and we’ll see what happens there, what position he takes up in pre-season and things like that, but from an England point of view I think he got the credit he deserved in the last two games and hopefully that’s him maybe getting a run in the team,” he added.

Andy Robertson on Alexis Mac Allister

The Scotland captain then shifted his attention to Liverpool’s latest summer signing Alexis Mac Allister. “Fantastic player. I’ve played against him in the last two or three years and obviously he’s done some special stuff with Brighton, and he’s obviously done a lot of special stuff with Argentina, being a World Cup winner and things like that. But he’s still relatively young, so a really good signing for us,” he stated.

“Early on in the window we’ve got that one done so obviously he’ll be in for pre-season and things like that, he’ll be able to settle in. I’m sure he’ll be a success at this club because he’s got everything, he’s got all the attributes to do that and we’ll try to help him as much as we can. So, we look forward to seeing him, we look forward to welcoming him into the changing room and, like I said, we look forward to, more importantly, seeing him in a Liverpool shirt.”
