Alaves spent six straight seasons in the La Liga before getting relegated at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, but they returned to the top flight at the first time of asking through the playoffs last season. The Glorious finished fourth in the Segunda Division standings last term, and overcame the likes of Eibar and Levante in the semi-final and final of the playoffs respectively to La Liga. Nevertheless, the Blue and whites were beaten by Cadiz in their curtain raiser on Monday courtesy Federico San Emeterio’s lone goal inside the opening seven minutes at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla. Meanwhile, Luis Garcia’s side have been busy in the transfer market this summer, bringing in the likes of Antonio Blanco, Ander Guevara and Andoni Gorosabel.
Sevilla, on the other hand, lost out to Valencia in their curtain raiser on August 11. The home attacker Youssef En-Nesyri canceled out Mouctar Diakhaby’s opener to leave the teams level at Estadio Ramon, but Javi Guerra won it for Los Che in the latter stages of the clash. Four days later, Jose Luis Mendikibar’s side were in action in the Super Cup final, and they took the lead through En-Nesyri’s 25th-minute opener, before Cole Palmer leveled the score for Manchester City three minutes into the hour mark. Both sides failed to find the winner in regulation time and the match went into penalties, where Man City prevailed 5-4. Nevertheless, the La Liga club would have taken plenty of heart from their performance against the best side in the world.
