Rennes will kick off their  2022-23 Europa League campaign with a trip to Cyprus to take on AEK Larnaca in a Group B match on Thursday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Omonia in a Cyprus First Division fixture last Saturday, while the Ligue 1 outfit played out a 1-1 draw with Troyes a day later. Rennes earned a spot in the group stages of Europe’s second tier club competition courtesy of securing a fourth place finish in the Ligue 1 last season, while Larnaca came through the qualifying rounds to reach this far.

AEK Larnaca haven’t had a great beginning to their Cyprus First Division season, recording one draw and a defeat from their opening two games so far. The Green yellows kicked off their campaign with a goalless draw at Doxa before losing to Omonia last Saturday. Although Adam Gyurcso and Victor Olatunji leveled the score for Larnaca, Fotis Papoulis’ 85th-minute strike helped Omonia secure the win. Prior to the start of the league season, Larnaca had defeated Dnipro-1 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa League playoff tie last month.

Rennes, on the other hand, have had a mixed start to their Ligue 1 season, recording two wins, two draws and two defeats to be sitting at the ninth position in the standings. In their last match at Troyes, Ike Ugbo’s opener was canceled out by Baptiste Santamaria to share the spoils. Les Rouges et Noir are in the hunt for their first clean sheet of the season. Last season, Rennes managed to reach the last-16 stage of Europa League, where they were eliminated by Leicester City.
