Top of the table race

The top two sides in the Premier League table registered comfortable victories this weekend to maintain their push for the trophy. Manchester City overcame Watford 5-1, while second-placed Liverpool won 2-0 against Everton in the Merseyside derby. Arsenal steer clear of top-four pack

Mikel Arteta’s team have to be one of the weekend’s greatest winners. Their impressive 3-1 win over Manchester United mean they are now leading the top-four battle. Everything that could go well for Arsenal this weekend went well. Not only did they defeat a fellow top-four rival in Manchester United but also saw the other two contenders drop points.

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a goalless draw at Brentford, while West Ham United lost 1-0 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. As a result, fourth-placed Arsenal now have 60 points from 33 games and are two points ahead of Tottenham, who have also played the same number of matches. Meanwhile, Man United and West Ham have 54 and 52 points respectively having played 34 games each.

Burnley lead the relegation battle

At the bottom of the table, Burnley are the biggest winners. Their narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves has helped them leapfrog Everton and out of the relegation places. Due to Burnley’s result, Everton, who played later on Sunday, had to win their match to climb out of the bottom three places. However, Frank Lampard’s side were beaten 2-0 by their local rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Furthermore, the other two relegation clubs – Watford and Norwich City – suffered heavy defeats. Burnley have 31 points from 33 games, while Everton have 29 points from 32 games. Watford and Norwich have 22 and 21 points respectively having played 33 games each.
