Manchester United news: Want to win trophies with the club, says Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has listed out his ambitions with Manchester United, stating that winning a trophy is what he wants the most with the club. He asserted that Manchester United fans and players “deserve” to win trophies. In the Emirates FA Cup, United have a fourth-round tie with Middlesbrough to look forward to in early February. Later in the month, they travel to Spain for the first leg of the Champions League round-of-16 meeting with Atletico Madrid. In an interview with United Review, the official matchday programme for Saturday’s visit of West Ham United to Old Trafford, the Portuguese international underlined his ambitions with the club.

Other than fighting for team honours, Fernandes also spoke about the confidence a player can get by winning individual prizes. “Of course, I think it’s always important to win individual trophies,” he told United Review. “As a player, you always want to win the team trophies, the ones that count really, but obviously individual ones, for us, it’s really important to have these kind of trophies to lift you up.

“It gives you confidence, to keep working hard, keep fighting and understand much more will surely come to you. You have to keep your way, the best way you can. I think, if you get that kind of credit, you have to know that the expectations on you will be higher and higher every day.”

United had a chance to end their trophy drought last season, but narrowly missed out on it after losing in the penalties against Villareal in the Europa League final. “My ambition is still the same,” he asserted.

“I want to win trophies with the club. That will always be in my mind until the last day I am at the club. I don’t know when that will be but, until then, I will believe that I can win trophies with this club because I think we can and I think the club deserves it, the fans deserve it and also the players, we deserve to win a trophy.

“Whenever that is, we have to do it step by step and understand we have those qualities but we have to understand how to do it, how to put everything together – the qualities and the intensity and everything.”

United might be out of the reckoning to fight for the top spot in the Premier League this season, but there is still much to play for in 2021/22 campaign. “Of course,” explained Bruno. “In the league it is too far now. We have to be realistic and we have to fight for the top four and being in the Champions League next season.

“At the same time, fight for the Champions League and the FA Cup. I don’t care what people think or can say about us winning the Champions League or the FA Cup. I think we have the chance to win it, the qualities to win it and, most of all, we are in those competitions. Until we are out, we have to believe we can win those competitions.”
