Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot revealed that the team’s dressing room was calm at half-time of Wednesday night’s win against Brentford in the Premier League. United were fortunate to not concede a goal in the first half, as David De Gea proved to be the hero yet again, making vital saves. Dalot said during the break the players knew that they “were not doing enough” to win the match. But, he also stated that everyone knew exactly what they had to change to improve their performance in the second half. United stepped up a level in the second period to win the match 3-1 in the end. Goals from Anthony Elanga and Mason Greenwood put United in the driving seat before Marcus Rashford came off the bench to wrap up the win to boost Manchester United’s top-four ambitions.

“We were calm in the dressing room,” Dalot said, according to their club’s website. “We knew that we were not doing enough to win the game, we conceded some chances to the opponent, but we knew what we needed to do. We had a game plan that we needed to stick to, be a little bit more aggressive to get to second balls, a bit more intensity on the counterattack, clinical in the last third and serve the players up front to score goals and that’s what we did. I think we did a very good second 45 minutes and in the end, it made for a good performance.”

Dalot: We need to keep doing this

United’s pressing game seemed to work in the second half, as they won the ball high up the pitch and broke forward quickly. “That’s one of our strengths, we need to keep doing this,” Dalot said of counterattacking to MUTV.

“The space is there, the quality of the players are there. Sometimes it’s just the serving that’s not quite there, so we need to improve on that, we need to improve on a lot of things as well, but we’re going to do that. We’re going to get there.”

Besides, interim manager Ralf Rangnick also reflected on Manchester United’s performance during his post-match duties. He added, “I wouldn’t say [we had] a strong conversation [at half-time[ but obviously we had to change a few things and the first half we were not good in almost all aspects of the game – sloppy passing, not strong enough in the 50/50 situations, and we gave away almost every second ball.”

“In the second half, we were more urgent, we were attacking them higher up the pitch, we were taking the right positions when we were on the counterattack, and we scored. This was the big difference.”
