Liverpool fans were in for a surprise treat in the January transfer window when the club signed Colombian forward Luis Diaz from Portuguese club FC Porto. The signing has certainly increased the excitement around fans to get to know their newest addition. However, it is not only the supporters, but the excitement seems to have caught with former players as well. Ian Rush, legendary former Liverpool striker, reckons that Luis Diaz’s arrival at Anfield will massively boost the level of quality. He also believes that this addition will increase the competition for places within the Liverpool squad.
Rush told Liverpoolfc.com: “He’s an excellent signing. I was surprised myself, to tell you the truth, but I think it’s competition for places. For me, I think it’s good because it’s competition for places. We’ve got one hell of a forward line now, haven’t we? I think [competition] just makes you want to play better. You look at what he’s like in training and if you see if he’s excellent in training, you’ve got to up your own game as well. That’s what it’s all about.”
“It’s competition for places. So when you see him training, you’re saying, ‘I’m not guaranteed a game, I’ve got to play well in training, never mind the games.’ It just gives you competition for places but I think it’s great for the manager. You’ve got to make the manager make the decision.”

Earlier, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was not able to hide his excitement at the signing of Luis Diaz from FC Porto. “I could not be happier that we’ve been able to get this deal done and bring Luis to Liverpool,” the manager had told Liverpoolfc.com. “I have always been a believer in only signing players in January if you would want to sign them in the summer, and that’s very much the case with Luis.
“He is an outstanding player and someone we’ve been tracking for a very long time. We believe he has everything needed to fit into our way and adapt to the Premier League, both physically and mentally. He is a player who is hungry for success and knows you have to fight to get what you want. He is a fighter, no doubt. He’s a skilful team player who has always the goal in mind.”
“This team deserved to add quality and when we played against Luis earlier this season, we saw what a danger he is, how fast he is and how his mentality was to help his team. We know Porto is an outstanding club who nurture players in the best possible way and provide a brilliant football education. They are a class club and, I have to say, have been tough negotiators.”
