Chelsea news: I’m getting better every week, says Hakim Ziyech

Any injury can be hard on a player, but for Ziyech it is a bit more frustrating, largely due to the work he put in to adapt to the new system introduced by Thomas Tuchel.

Hakim Ziyech came to prominence with his impressive showings with Dutch giants Ajax. It got the attention of Europe’s elites with several teams trying to price him away from the Netherlands. Chelsea won the race in getting the signature of the attacking midfielder, who can also play as a winger. Great things were expected from him at Stamford Bridge, but his journey in London has not gone according to plan. Ziyech has endured a stop-start career at the Premier League club, largely due to frequent injuries.

Even at the start of the current season, he picked up a shoulder problem after scoring in the UEFA Super Cup victory, which ended up affecting his opening part of the campaign. Ziyech has now opened up about those frustrating injuries that have hampered his season. However, the Moroccan hopes to put those concerns behind him and is keen on maintaining his recent good form for the Blues.

“It’s crazy,” Ziyech told his club website. “Every time when you’re doing well you get an injury or whatever, something bad happens, and then you always have to start over again and over again. With injuries it always comes at a bad moment. The games are coming quick behind each other and there is also not a lot to work harder on. If you didn’t play you do a bit harder training session than all the others, but it’s not always the fitness that you need when you come back after injury.”

Ziyech: I had a good period behind me

The 29-year-old had to leave to pitch due to an injury in the first leg of the Champions League win over Lille. However, he is back fit now, scoring on his birthday in the last match against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

“I’m good. I’m getting better every week again. I just came back from an injury, of course, but it goes well and everything is fine. Right now I think I’m in a good way. I had a good period behind me and I try to do that again,” Ziyech explained.

Any injury can be hard on a player, but for Ziyech it is a bit more frustrating, largely due to the work he put in to adapt to the new system introduced by Thomas Tuchel. Ziyech has admitted that he found the adjustment a bit more challenging than some of his teammates at Stamford Bridge.

“Everybody knows I think if I play wide it’s my best position, so if we play four in the back most of the time I play on the right and when we play a back five there’s a different system, but I think during the time since he came in I adapted really good,” he added.

“‘I think I had a bit more problems than most other players because I never used to play in a back five. I needed some time and I took that time to adapt and to learn from it and improve and I think if you see me at this point in that role it’s much better than in the beginning.”
