Between 2012-14, he won his first grand prix title, a European title and a World Championship title. In 2015 & 2016 Viktor gave many promising performances in many Super Series like India Open, Australia Open etc. He was also part of the team that won the Thomas Cup for the first time in 2016.
However, Axelsen’s hour of reckoning came when it came to the Summer Olympics of 2016 when he defeated the Chinese legend Lin Dan to secure the Bronze medal. In 2017, Axelsen won the World Championships to become the third Danish player to ever become a world champion. Axelsen followed up his victory by winning the finals of the Japan Open tournament propelling him to the top of the BWF World Rankings. He added to his medal tally a second European Championship and an All-England Open title between 2018-2020. To add the cherry on top, he won the gold medal in the finals against the defending champion Chen Long in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Axelsen’s confidence before the finals was evident as “The medal is in the house. I believe I can win gold. I believe 120 per cent in myself.”
