After the Malaysia Masters 2023, the BWF world shifts its attention to yet another Super 500 event, the Thailand Open 2023. The Thailand Open in badminton is an open international championship held in Thailand since 1984. It was halted in 1986, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2021. India had four different winners in the competition’s history. Saina Nehwal won the women’s singles title in 2012, Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth won the men’s singles titles in 2013 and 2017, respectively, and the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the title in 2019. 2023 has been one of the most competitive seasons, especially in the men’s singles category, with HS Prannoy being the latest entrant into the list of players to have won a title in the year. No player has won more than one title in men’s singles in the BWF World Tour in 2023.

Heading into the Day 4 of the Thailand Open will see intensified action as the tournament enters the Quarterfinals. The doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had earlier stormed into the Round of 16. However, in round 16, they could not overcome the challenge of Bagas Maulana and Mohammad Fikri. The Indian pair put up a great fight but the Indonesians were too hot to handle. The clash between 23-year-old Ashmita Chaliha and the sixth-seeded Carolina Marin also ended in the defeat of the youngster. Although Ashmita put up a great fight however, she could not stand a chance in front of the experienced shuttler. Another experienced shuttler Saina Nehwal also had to taste defeat at the hands of the Chinese shuttler He Bingjao.

The boys however did not disappoint in the Thailand Open. Kiran George continued the form that he had shown against Shi Yuqi. He defeated another formidable Chinese opponent Weng Hongyang. Kiran will now face Toma Junior Popov from France. On the other hand, Thomas Cup winner Lakshya Sen also did not disappoint the coaches. Lakshya faced Li Shifeng from China. The Indian shuttler did not face any difficulty in defeating his Chinese opponent. Lakshya will now face Leong Jun Hao from Malaysia in the quarterfinals.
