The German Open is an annual badminton tournament held in Germany since 1955 and organized by the German Badminton Association or Deutscher Badminton Verband (DBV). The tournaments were not held in the years 1970, 1979 and 1998 due to unknown reasons.

Known as the German Badminton Championships until 1980, the tournament was later allowed to be known as the Open Championships from 1981 on. The tournament is currently sponsored by Yonex. While it does attract professional players, the event is not part of the highest levels of Badminton World Federation tournaments. Currently, the German Open is classified as a BWF Grand Prix Gold event until 2017. Post 2017 it has been classified as a Super 300 tournament.

Indian shuttlers at German Open 2024

India will be represented by 13 shuttlers at the German Open 2024 badminton tournament, which starts in Mulheim on Tuesday. Most of the top Indian badminton players have opted to skip the BWF Super 300 meet.

In the absence of the big names, women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will spearhead the Indian challenge in Mulheim. The duo played an integral part in the Indian women’s team’s historic gold medal win at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Busan earlier this month and will look to continue their good form in Germany.

Seeded fourth in the women’s doubles main draw, Treesa and Gayatri are the only rated Indian players at the German Open 2024. Aakarshi Kashyap, ranked 45th, and world No. 75 Tanya Hemnath are the two Indians in the women’s singles main draw, which will be headlined by reigning world champion An Se Young of Chinese Taipei.
